Dear John Dethrones Avatar!

Lasse Hallström's Dear John, the romantic drama movie that just came out on February 5th took first in the box office on its opening weekend, sending James Cameron's Avatar to second place in the ranks.
With the overall top ten movie ticket sales going as this:

1. Dear John: $32.4 million
2. Avatar: $23 million
3. From Paris with Love: $8.1 million
4. Edge of Darkness: $7 million
5. Tooth Fairy: $6.5 million
6. When in Rome: $5.5 million
7. The Book of Eli: $4.8 million
8. Crazy Heart: $3.6 million
9. Legion: $3.4 million
10. Sherlock Holmes: $2.6 million

Overall Avatar had an estimated cost between $230 million to $500 million. Development on Avatar began in 1994, when Cameron wrote an 80-page scriptment for the film. And was released in 2009 and was the best movie of the year for 7 weeks long. On the other hand, Dear John costed only $25 million.
“It is the most expensive film we’ve made, but now, having the luxury of hindsight, it is money well spent, so I’m not concerned about it,” - James Gianopulos, co-chairman and C.E.O. of Fox Filmed Entertainment said about Avatar

"Audiences for the film were 84 percent female and two-thirds were under the age of 21." Sony said about Dear John
Avatar, the Sci-Fi/Action hit of 2009 overall got an amazing 8.6/10 out of 191,485 votes. (IMDB: Avatar) Whilst, Dear John, the Romantic/Drama and the box office winner of 2010 got a lower rating of 5.3/10 out of 2,185 votes. (IMDB: Dear John)While Avatar was mainly aimed towards the young adult audience and caught the eyes of more action seeking audiences, there wasn't a solid audience that Avatar was aiming for. Dear John on the other hand, caught the eyes of female young adults all around. There was a solid audience of young women that are interested in the love story; to which, it doesn't quite matter on terms of how well the movie was overall to the box office ticket sales. According to reviews, Avatar was a better movie in terms of how it was made but its specific audience is more vague than Dear John. Bottom line, the reason why Dear John beat Avatar in ticket sales, is the female young adult audience was far more than that of the Avatar's general audience. Both great movies, but in the end Dear John won the box office's number one spot.
