3D..A Bit Too Far? - Editorial

3D - Dictionary definition: –adjective
1.of, pertaining to, or representing something in three dimensions
–noun
2.a three-dimensional form or appearance
3D - Dictionary.com
A once unique theatric and visual experience now made into a modern day everyday experience that we all recognize? From 2000-2010 America's 3D showing went from the "red & blue" lenses to the true 3D IMAX lenses; this once incredible cinematic experience has gone a bit too far. Keeping it unique the movie industry should have kept certain movies on bay with 3D. Moving onward with 3D seems like a reasonable idea but not when we backtrack, turning old kid movies into 3D. On June 18th, the nationally known kids movie "Toy Story" will be releasing their third addition to the series, Toy Story 3-D. This is highly ridiculous; the 3D experience should be left with the oncoming newest editions to movies and even then, keeping it to a “once in a while” thing. Even then, who wants to go spend two to three more dollars, or even more, on glasses that you can’t even keep and in most cases there aren’t very many times in a 3D movie when you actually see 3D, might as well keep it at a normal movie experience and spend that extra two to three dollars on refreshments and food.
Talk about it being overused; now 3D is being moved from the big screen to your everyday home entertainment system. Texas Instruments has now made the “3D TV” which is available for sale from Mitsubishi and Samsung. Such TV’s require the 3D glasses which, by themselves, cost at least one hundred dollars each! That’s including the possibility that they can be broken or lost, then you would have to buy a brand new pair of 3D glasses, another hundred dollars down the drain to have the chance that this new pair breaks too! The TV’s also cost just about one thousand to seventeen hundred dollars each. Put it all together, and the TV including at least one to five pairs of 3D glasses, that’s assuming that they don’t break, would cost you about eleven hundred dollars to twenty two hundred dollars! Then if they break, buying more replacements would cost you a couple hundred more dollars, in my opinion that’s too much. I can sit at home with a regular flat screen television that would cost me from six hundred dollars to three grand, but I won’t have to worry about spending any more on it than the rare occasions of buying a new remote control for the television.
I say, stick with an occasional 3D experience the movie and television industry shouldn’t go overboard on the new technology, it’s just going to wear out the quality of the experience and be tomorrow’s old news.

Dear John Dethrones Avatar!

Lasse Hallström's Dear John, the romantic drama movie that just came out on February 5th took first in the box office on its opening weekend, sending James Cameron's Avatar to second place in the ranks.
With the overall top ten movie ticket sales going as this:

1. Dear John: $32.4 million
2. Avatar: $23 million
3. From Paris with Love: $8.1 million
4. Edge of Darkness: $7 million
5. Tooth Fairy: $6.5 million
6. When in Rome: $5.5 million
7. The Book of Eli: $4.8 million
8. Crazy Heart: $3.6 million
9. Legion: $3.4 million
10. Sherlock Holmes: $2.6 million

Overall Avatar had an estimated cost between $230 million to $500 million. Development on Avatar began in 1994, when Cameron wrote an 80-page scriptment for the film. And was released in 2009 and was the best movie of the year for 7 weeks long. On the other hand, Dear John costed only $25 million.
“It is the most expensive film we’ve made, but now, having the luxury of hindsight, it is money well spent, so I’m not concerned about it,” - James Gianopulos, co-chairman and C.E.O. of Fox Filmed Entertainment said about Avatar

"Audiences for the film were 84 percent female and two-thirds were under the age of 21." Sony said about Dear John
Avatar, the Sci-Fi/Action hit of 2009 overall got an amazing 8.6/10 out of 191,485 votes. (IMDB: Avatar) Whilst, Dear John, the Romantic/Drama and the box office winner of 2010 got a lower rating of 5.3/10 out of 2,185 votes. (IMDB: Dear John)While Avatar was mainly aimed towards the young adult audience and caught the eyes of more action seeking audiences, there wasn't a solid audience that Avatar was aiming for. Dear John on the other hand, caught the eyes of female young adults all around. There was a solid audience of young women that are interested in the love story; to which, it doesn't quite matter on terms of how well the movie was overall to the box office ticket sales. According to reviews, Avatar was a better movie in terms of how it was made but its specific audience is more vague than Dear John. Bottom line, the reason why Dear John beat Avatar in ticket sales, is the female young adult audience was far more than that of the Avatar's general audience. Both great movies, but in the end Dear John won the box office's number one spot.
